Assistant Professor of Political Science

Mount Mercy University is a Catholic, coeducational University founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928 enrolling nearly 1900 students.  The University offers a variety of liberal arts, professional, accelerated, online, and graduate degree programs on our picturesque campus overlooking the city of Cedar Rapids.

We are seeking an Assistant Professor of Political Science who is committed to effective teaching, guiding program growth, and designing enriched student opportunities. This position, beginning August 2016, involves teaching introductory and advanced courses in such core areas as American politics and government, globalization, comparative politics, public policy, international relations, U.S. foreign policy, and political theory or philosophy.  A secondary area of specialization is an asset. The faculty member also will provide leadership in creating vibrant curricular and co-curricular experiences through the Pre-Law program, internships, and other opportunities.

Advising, service, and active participation in the department and university are expected, along with ability to teach in traditional, accelerated, or online formats. A Ph.D. and active research agenda are required for tenure-track status. The tenure-track workload consists of 21 credit hours of teaching (7 courses) and the equivalent of 3 credit hours for scholarship.  Applicants with a Master’s degree may be considered for a non-tenure track position.

The successful candidate should demonstrate a willingness to support Mount Mercy’s mission as a Catholic university, providing student-focused education in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy. Mount Mercy University welcomes those of different faiths and cultural backgrounds and is committed to excellence in education and community service.

Review of application materials will begin on April 25, 2016, and continue until the position is filled. Qualified candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching interests, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and contact information for three professional references as Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat attachments to: hr@mtmercy.edu with the subject line, “Political Science.”  Only application materials emailed to this address will be considered.  Paper application materials will not be reviewed.
