Accounting majors learn the skills needed to analyze financial documents and perform auditing functions.

Job Possibilities
Accounting majors often pursue Certified Public Accountant (CPA) status and the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation. Common career paths include tax research or tax preparation, auditing, management, and cost accounting-related positions. Mount Mercy accounting graduates have gone on to work for companies like RSM McGladrey, Rockwell-Collins, AEGON/Transamerica, Great America Leasing, GE Capital, Alliant Energy, Toyota Financial Services and the Internal Revenue Service.

Accounting majors have a chance to gain hands-on experience through internships. Past internship opportunities have included Rockwell Collins, Transamerica, Raining Rose, 2nd Story Software, and Guaranty Bank. Students have interned as internal auditors, within investment securities, accounts payable, and taxpayer support.

Study Abroad
Students enjoy studying abroad during winter term in Europe and the U.K. The excellent opportunity for students to experience a short-term stay overseas with a direct business/cultural connection.

Student Clubs
Accounting majors are welcome to join the Investment Club to enhance classroom work with practical experience in the stock market and online trading. The club often visits the Chicago Board of Trade, Chicago Mercantile, and has toured the New York stock exchange in the past. The Investment Club has also attended the annual Berkshire-Hathaway shareholders meeting to listen to investment guru Warren Buffet. Accounting majors also are involved with Enactus at Mount Mercy. This club emphasizes service-related projects and also competes annually with a presentation team that has been very successful over the years.
