Honors Program

This program offers accomplished students unique classes that encourage the exploration of ideas beyond traditional academic boundaries and strengthen skills that make students successful learners.

Honors General Education Classes

Honors general education classes allow students to assume high levels of responsibility for their learning. The classes are structured to encourage students to speak out on issues and be more involved in the learning process. Honors general education classes are offered during the fall, winter, and spring terms.

First-Year Student Requirements

  • Minimum ACT of 26 or SAT of 1230
  • First quartile of graduating class
  • Minimum high school GPA of 3.6

First-year students who do not meet the stated criteria but believe they could do well in the Honors Program may petition the Honors Advisory Council for a probationary admittance to the Honors Program.

Honors Seminars

Honors seminars are unique interdisciplinary seminars taught by faculty from a variety of disciplines. They’re offered during the fall, winter, and spring terms and are open to all students with at least sophomore standing and a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Transfer Students

Transfer students from Kirkwood Community College who have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 at the end of their first year at Kirkwood, and have completed a one-credit-hour honors project with at least a grade of B or better are qualified to receive the Honors Scholarship as follows:

  • During your second academic year at Kirkwood, you’ll be permitted to take one honors section course or any three-credit-hour regular course offered at the sophomore or junior levels at Mount Mercy free of charge.
  • Those who take an honors section course and pass it with a grade of B or better will be accepted into the Honors Program.

Transfer students who have successfully completed honors courses at other colleges and universities may petition for the courses to apply towards honors requirements at Mount Mercy.
