Accounting (Accelerated)

The accounting major prepares students for professional positions in all areas of accounting.

An Accounting Program for Working Adults

Complete your degree in as little as 18-24 months! (based on program and transfer credit)

This program of study is a blend of five-week and 10-week accelerated courses, as well as select semester-length courses for upper-level accounting coursework.

Our graduates are in demand by local employers in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids corridor. Many are currently employed as:

  • staff accountants in CPA firms
  • financial and management accountants for corporations
  • controllers for small to medium-sized businesses
  • financial analysts
  • accounting managers for larger businesses
  • agents for the Internal Revenue Service

The accounting major is designed to give you the necessary coursework to prepare for all professional exams, including the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exams.

Start taking classes when it’s convenient for you.

Our courses are designed for working adults like you—so you can work, spend time with family and friends, and still earn your degree. Courses are taught almost exclusively by full-time faculty members with significant teaching and professional experience.

There's no need to wait months to start taking classes. At Mount Mercy, we have nine start dates throughout the year, and class blocks are every five weeks.

Transfer Your Credits

  • Transfer up to 75 credits from an Iowa community college or up to 93 credits from a regionally accredited 4-year university

  • Students may transfer up to 60 credits from College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and 30 credits for your life experience using the Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) portfolio documentation

  • Veterans may also earn credit for military training via the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)

As long as the student is willing to put in the time and exert strong effort, they can be successful.
