The University

Mount Mercy University, founded more than 85 years ago by the Sisters of Mercy, is a Catholic University that provides excellent student focused baccalaureate and graduate education.  The campus is located on a 40-acre campus in a tree lined residential neighborhood in the heart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, equi-distant from Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and St. Louis.

The Position

The Vice President for Finance and Business is an executive level appointment, reporting directly to the President of the University and serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the University’s senior administrative team.  As fiduciary officer of the University and its Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President for Finance and Business is responsible for ensuring the fiscal integrity and strength of the institution by:

  • Managing the fiscal responsibilities of the University including finance, accounting, budget, endowment management and real estate transactions.
  • Serving as the primary liaison to the Finance and Investment Committees of the Board, to all University banking and financial relationships, to the external auditors and to endowment investment managers.
  • Preparing and monitoring the institutional annual budget in consultation with other Vice Presidents and the President.
  • Contributing to the University’s strategic vision, providing executive oversight of the University’s strategic financial implementation and security, and advising on long-range financial planning.
  • Overseeing and managing the University’s financial risk management, including the property and casualty insurance programs.
  • Planning, managing, and developing the University’s debt and debt policies while ensuring compliance with any debt covenants.
  • Ensuring the security and investment of the full-range of University assets in accordance with Board governance and policies.
  • Managing institutional compliance with higher education legal and financial requirements.
  • Managing the creation of a financial services department combining financial aid and the business office.
  • Providing supervision of physical plant management, construction projects and campus physical resources including maintenance, campus master planning and physical plant resource development.
  • Overseeing the contractual and auxiliary services of the University including food service and campus printing.
  • Overseeing the operations of the Campus Store, including creation of innovative revenue streams and alternative ways to meet student needs.
  • Providing vision for and oversight of the institution’s human resources and information technology operations.
  • Providing a vision for and expertise in effective and efficient use of the institution’s administrative software systems and effective training programs for direct reports.
  • Developing alternative revenue sources for the University.
  • Engaging with the broader professional community in higher education finance and business, including benchmarking of institutional financial performance within that environment.

The individual in this position must demonstrate an understanding of and a commitment to the University as a Catholic, Mercy institution of higher learning.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; master’s degree and CPA along with higher education experience highly preferred. The candidate must be a proven leader with 5-7 years of success in leading the financial operations of a vibrant, contemporary organization.  The successful candidate will demonstrate extraordinary proficiency in effective budget administration, strategic financial analysis and planning along with prudent investing and risk management.  The successful candidate will also be familiar with contemporary financial aid leveraging/net revenue management systems.
