Grant Wood's First Sale

Home - The Project - The Colony - The Artists - Resources - Credits

Grant Wood's first sale of a painting was to Mrs. John Barry, the mother of John W. Barry, Jr. who would become the photographer for the Stone City Art Colony and School. Family stories place the amount at from $5 to $20. John W. Barry's sister insisted that the agreed price was $10. The Impressionist-style scene is thought to be the Palisades on the Cedar River near Mount Vernon, Iowa in what is now Palisades-Dows State Preserve. The painting is currently owned by John W. Barry's youngest granddaughter, Susan Elderkin of Seattle, Washington.  Image courtesy of Shearon B. Elderkin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
