Robert L. Nunn [“Bob”] (1911-2000) - student Born in Cedar Rapids, Bob Nunn attended Grant High School and immediately pursued his art interests by designing posters and graphic art for local businesses. He attended the 1932 session of the Stone City Art Colony and chose commercial art design as his profession. Nunn won accolades in 1930s Iowa State Fairs with his posters, especially one created for the Des Moines Register, which took first prize in 1933. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Art (NYC) to complete his studies in graphic design and went on to be employed at several art studios and advertising agencies in Chicago. Nunn served in the 3rd Army Division during World War II and was part of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), the forces that led the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. He was appointed as an aid to high-ranking officers, handled communications and clerical duties. Nunn also painted military posters used to alert American soldiers of health risks and cultural changes in foreign nations. Back in Cedar Rapids, Nunn worked as an art director for the W.D. Lyon Advertising Agency, later known as CMF& Z. He pursued free-lance commercial and industrial photography and technical illustration while working for several clients, including Collins Radio/Rockwell Collins and Amana Refrigeration. In his spare time, Nunn was an avid lithographer and designed jewelry. He remained a resident of Cedar Rapids and died there in February 2000. Online Resources for Robert Nunn: (none) |
