Elma Reeder Horne (1893-1982) - student

Born in Oberlin, Kansas, Elma Reeder and her family eventually relocated to Hot Springs, South Dakota, where she completed high school in 1912. Reeder immediately enrolled at the University of Nebraska and received her Bachelors of Art degree in 1916. While a student, she was active in the Chi Omega sorority and met her future husband, Louis Willard Horne. The two married in 1917; her husband worked as a full-time teacher but became active in local and state politics. He was appointed as the secretary to Nebraska governor Samuel R. McKelvie (1919-1922) and later grew active in national relief agencies during World War I.

Elma attended both sessions of the Stone City Art Colony and became known as a painter and sculptor of regional recognition, particularly in Nebraska. After earning a second degree in painting from the University of Nebraska (BFA, 1935), she offered private art lessons to children (1936-38) and exhibited frequently. Notable showings of her oil paintings include: the Nebraska-Iowa Exhibit, Joslyn Art Museum (1933); the Five-States Exhibition, Joslyn Art Museum (1934-36); Lincoln Artists Guild, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1937-38); and the Kansas City Art Institute (1937).

Horne was an active member of the Nebraska Art Association and the Lincoln (NE) Artists Guild. She died in Pacific Grove, California in 1982.
