Embodying Success

A degree in marketing wasn’t the first choice of Erynn DeRycke ’14 when she arrived at Mount Mercy University, but it eventually provided her with the preparation needed to succeed in her business.

Erynn was attracted to Mount Mercy for its campus, class sizes, and distance from her hometown, but her main focus at the time was to be a part of its excellent nursing program.

After her first year as a nursing major, she realized that the marketing program would be a better fit because she wanted to work for a non-profit organization, so she changed majors.

Throughout Erynn’s time in the marketing program, she made many great connections through being a Student Ambassador, a member of Best Buddies, and an Event Intern in the Admissions Office.

“Working in the Admission Office was a blast; I loved giving tours to prospective students. I also made lifelong friends and am so grateful that Mount Mercy brought us together,” shared Erynn.

One of Erynn’s favorite memories was when she would take her mattress off her bed and drag it to her friend’s dorm room so they could have slumber parties on the floor.

Not only did she connect with other students, but Erynn also had a special connection to faculty member Anne King, who was an Assistant Professor of Business at the time. Anne was a great help to her during her time on the Hill and after graduation.

“Anne was one of the first people I reached out to when I decided to start my own business and was so helpful with starting my business plan. I feel so lucky to have had her,” said Erynn.

In 2022, Erynn opened a bridal boutique in downtown Cedar Rapids that helps brides shop for the dress of their dreams, embodying their personality without the anxieties that surround physical traits. At Embody Bridal, shoppers have the whole shop to themselves, promoting a sense of calmness while looking at the wide variety of sizes and trendy dress options.

As the owner of Embody Bridal, Erynn does everything. She makes sure social media posts are scheduled, holds appointments with brides, orders dresses and accessories, organizes inventory, and responds to emails.

Erynn attributes her marketing degree with helping her gain many valuable skills that have led to success in entrepreneurship.

“My marketing degree gave me the knowledge and confidence to go into whatever role I’m in and really make it my own. Having a good educational foundation is so important,” shared Erynn.

Erynn encourages marketing students to network with people at school or in the community because it can significantly impact one's life. Without creating connections and switching her major, Erynn wouldn’t have found the business success she has today.
