I joined the Education Faculty in 1978 after teaching experiences in a laboratory preschool, day care, and public school kindergarten. Currently I am responsible for course work in two endorsement areas: PreKindergarten-Kindergarten and Prekindergarten through Grade 3 Including Special Education, informally referred to as Unified Early Childhood. I am interested in the environmental context in which young children grow and develop, with particular emphasis on contemporary issues such as early brain development, mental health, gender equity, and cultural differences. I have served on state and local teams to improve early literacy instruction, and currently I am involved with a Department of Education committee working on teacher dispositions. I am active in a variety of professional organizations and have visited many early childhood programs internationally. Locally I am working to improve programs and systems of early care and education through involvement in policy making and advisory committees and as a volunteer consultant with the Quality Early Childhood Initiative. The courses I teach span work for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Coupled with senior student teaching supervision, they afford me the pleasure of seeing students mature as committed and competent professionals. One reward of my position is a feeling of contributing to the well-being of children and families through the work of our Mount Mercy graduates. contact me at: phone 319-363-8213 x1266 |
