I joined the Education Division at Mount Mercy in 2003. I have my BA in elementary education and my MA in special education. Before coming to Mount Mercy, I taught fifth grade general education and elementary, bilingual special education. I worked in the West Liberty School District within the Dual Language Program. Since these students learn to read in their native language, I instructed students in both English and Spanish. I have experience teaching students with a variety of disabilities, including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, mental disabilities, ADD, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, and communication disorders. I enjoy the individualized, student-driven focus of special education. My professional passions include bilingual education, behavior disorders, and leadership. Currently, I teach Human Relations and courses in the special education endorsements. I also co-lead the seminar for all student teachers and supervise student teachers in special education classrooms. I enjoy collaborating with professionals in these schools and staying current with new ideas. This gives me insight into “the real world” and realistic ways to apply classroom theory to practice. My husband and I were blessed with our daughter, Taylor, in December 2005. We are enjoying every moment with her and watching her reach different milestones. We also have two dachshunds, Madison and Sammy. In my limited free time I enjoy exercise, reading, and time with friends. Because I am from the Chicago area, we travel back there frequently.
