Mount Mercy University’s newest club, Students Leaving a Mark (SLAM) is a student-driven philanthropy club dedicated to increasing the awareness of giving on campus and thanking those who have already contributed. Lecturer of Business Anne King and Director of Annual Support Patrick Collins helped initiate the new student-run club, which provides initiatives that seek to educate the campus on giving, while recognizing and thanking contributions already made by current students.

Mount Mercy University today announced that alumnae Mary LoVerde and Pat Marschel have established an endowed scholarship in honor of their mothers. The Lou Schulte-Lois Corkery Endowed Scholarship (Title III) is designed to provide funding for scholarships for worthy and deserving students whose major is nursing, with preference given to students from Mediapolis High School in Mediapolis, Iowa, or Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville, Iowa.

Mount Mercy students in the Honors Student Association participated in “Trick or Canning” this past Halloween to raise canned goods for the Catherine McAuley Center. Students went door-to-door on Halloween night and asked for canned donations. The event is an annual tradition, and enables students to participate in servant leadership and volunteerism to benefit a non-profit organization in the community.

Mount Mercy University has named Heidi Hesse as Events Coordinator/Admissions Counselor. She began her duties October 18. Hesse will be responsible for coordinating on- and off-campus events and have an assigned recruitment territory of high schools for recruiting and assisting prospective students. Her duties include tracking and evaluating recruiting data in order to initiate effective and innovative recruiting strategies. She will also be responsible for coordinating recruitment events, receptions, open houses and special outreach programs.

Mount Mercy University mourns the loss of Sister Mary Clementine Cashman, RSM, who passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010 at Mercy Hallmar Care Center in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness. Services were held at the Chapel of Mercy at Mount Mercy University on Monday, October 25 at 10:30 a.m. by Rev. David Ambrosy. Burial was at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Arrangements were with Stewart Baxter Funeral and Memorial Services.

Mount Mercy University now offers new specialty license plates, available through the Iowa Department of Transportation. Mount Mercy alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of the University can showcase their pride in Iowa’s newest university with Mustangs blue and gold license plates. The plates are available through each Iowa county treasurer’s office.

Mount Mercy University honored eight alumni on Saturday, October 2, during a special recognition luncheon as part of Mount Mercy’s Homecoming 2010 celebration. Cedar Rapids resident Katie Ferris Feldman ’80 received the Alumni Misericordiae Award, presented for humanitarian service to others through professional or volunteer activities. Feldman currently serves as a clinical nurse specialist at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

Mount Mercy University will host its first visit day of the semester on Saturday, October 9, from 10:00 – 12:30 p.m. Visit days provide a chance for prospective students to explore the campus, learn about campus opportunities, residence halls, and co-curricular activities, and have lunch with current students and hear what they have to say about their Mount Mercy experience.
