Twelve African-American community leaders will gather at Mount Mercy University on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 5:30-7 p.m. for a professional panel presentation titled “The Black and White of Being a Black Professional in Eastern Iowa.”

Charlotte Joy Martin, Ph.D., Mount Mercy religious studies professor, presented “Liturgy as the Heart of John Paul II’s Social Encyclicals” as a visiting scholar to Saint John’s University in Collegeville, MN in February 2014. Dr. Martin’s thought-provoking lecture focused on the Eucharist and its social teachings as expressed by Pope John Paul II, including reflections from her life-changing understanding of the Pope’s 1979 speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

Iowa high school seniors enrolling as new Mount Mercy University freshmen in the fall of 2014 will have a unique financial aid option – the Catherine McAuley Scholarship. “The scholarship is meant to bridge the gap some students encounter between grant amounts and remaining tuition costs, essentially resulting in free tuition,” stated Dean of Admissions Terri Crumley. “This scholarship, aligned with our mission, will allow even more talented young people to pursue their academic dreams with Mount Mercy.”
Kevin Touhey, Mount Mercy University Men's Basketball Coach

Former Mount Mercy University Men’s Basketball Coach and Men’s Athletic Director Kevin Touhey will be recognized by friends and family for his contributions to Mount Mercy athletics during a gathering on Feb. 22 from 1-5 p.m. The get-together will be held in Hennessey Recreation Center, a building which Touhey helped make a reality. “He had a lot of input into the Hennessey Recreation Center, which was being built in his last years here, but he never got to coach in it unfortunately,” said Paul Gavin, men’s head basketball coach and a former student athlete of Touhey’s.

Mount Mercy University English professor Dr. Jim Grove presented his personal recollections of Czechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolution to Meth-Wick residents on Jan. 31, 2014 as part of the new M&M Scholars series. “I spoke about it because this is the 25th anniversary of the revolution,” remarked Dr. Grove. “I especially stressed how the students at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia, were at the forefront of the revolution and my feelings about the revolution 25 years later.”

Students Naomi Fisher and Rachel Vaughn each took a half-court shot at a $1,000 scholarship during the men’s basketball game against St. Ambrose on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014. During the fall 2013 semester, Mount Mercy’s student alumni group Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.) offered students a chance at winning one of two scholarships if they participated in an athletic attendance punch card initiative, and could sink a shot from Hennessey’s half-court. Fisher and Vaughn, both nursing students, were randomly drawn as the finalists.

The Mount Mercy Times won 15 awards, including three first-place awards, seven second-place awards, two third place awards and three honorable mentions at the Iowa College Media Association convention Feb. 6 in Des Moines. Fourteen of the awards were in the ICMA “Better Newspaper” contest, recognizing the Mount Mercy Times newspaper. The other award was in the Multi-Media competition, which included the Times web site.

David Van Allen, emeritus professor at Mount Mercy University, will be one of three artists showcased in “A different view,” Black Earth Gallery’s latest show. An opening reception will be held on Feb. 6 from 5-7 p.m. The work of Shane McCallister and Ellen Mariano will also be featured. The show will run through March 29 at Black Earth Gallery, 329 10th Avenue SE, suite 231. Van Allen became a full-time employee at Mount Mercy in 1991. In addition to teaching, he was gallery director and college photographer.
