Students at Mount Mercy University traded old for new in the Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) t-shirt swap held Oct. 24. Learners donated college-branded t-shirts from around the country and in return received a new Mount Mercy shirt. “We collected over 100 t-shirts advertising other colleges and universities,” said Ryan Phillips, annual giving coordinator. “Our Development and Alumni Relations office supplied each donor with a brand new Mount Mercy t-shirt to replace their old one.”

Ellen O’Keefe, Mount Mercy associate professor of education and education department chair, will speak to Hawkeye Community College students at a noon luncheon on Nov. 20. Professor O'Keefe will discuss the nuances of the university’s education program, along with thoughts on PRAXIS – an educational licensure test. She will answer student questions as they relate to learning, academic requirements and student life on Mount Mercy’s campus.

Jacob Christenson, Ph.D, assistant professor and clinical director for Mount Mercy University CRST International Graduate Center’s Marriage and Family Therapy program, will speak at Bridgehaven’s Building Family Connections Conference on Saturday, Nov. 16. Christenson’s lecture will focus on the importance of nurturing a child’s inherent strengths. “I welcome all youth caregivers and parents to enjoy this event,” said Dr. Christenson. “Attendees will certainly learn new ways of thinking and new communication tips for fostering a child’s success.”

Mount Mercy University and Kirkwood Community College celebrate a 15-year collaborative partnership that has connected nearly 1,300 hard-working adults with bachelor’s degrees.  "The accelerated degree partnership between the two schools is not only convenient and fast, it manages to maintain the highest degree of academic quality, while providing individual support for students as they transition between the two schools," states Tom Castle, associate provost at Mount Mercy University. "The impact these graduates have on our community is immeasurable."

Mount Mercy University’s Registrar’s Office is hosting a donation drive in support of patients at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. New and unopened travel-size personal hygiene products may be donated. “Items like trial-size shampoo and soap will help make a veteran’s stay more comfortable,” stated Kim Blankenheim, academic records specialist. “This drive is our way of showing support for those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.”

Heavy hearts are felt campus-wide as Mount Mercy mourns the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Dale Harrison, who passed away Nov. 1, 2013. Dale retired from the college’s faculty in 2006 after nearly 40 years of teaching in the business department. He remained a steadfast advocate for a well-rounded Mount Mercy education and frequently returned to campus to visit with colleagues and students over lunch in the cafeteria.

In June 2013, Mount Mercy University formally announced plans to transform vacant industrial space at 909 17th St NE into a multi-sport, outdoor facility for their student athletes. The news was received with a flurry of enthusiastic community support. As Mount Mercy looks forward to developing the 22-acre lot, the momentum for the project continues through Home Field Advantage, a fundraising campaign for the university’s athletic complex.

Mount Mercy University psychology students presented research posters at the 23rd Annual Tri-State Undergraduate Psychology Conference on November 2. Their works contributed to 50 data displays showcasing the detailed efforts of learners from across the tri-state area.
