It is with great sadness that Mount Mercy University mourns the passing of Sister Judith Meyers, who died peacefully at Mercy Medical Center on October 27, 2013. Sister Judith served as Mount Mercy’s mission officer for many years. Friends may call at the University’s Chapel of Mercy from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, with the wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel on Wednesday, October 30. Our thoughts are with Sister Judith’s family, friends, and the Sisters of Mercy during this difficult time.

Mount Mercy joins Corridor communities in mourning the loss of alumna Peggy Whitworth ’64, who passed away October 25, 2013. Peggy was instrumental in creating the Brucemore Historic Site, serving as its executive director until 2007. Her unwavering advocacy toward the cause of preservation is credited by many as the keystone behind Brucemore’s magnificent grounds. Peggy’s community-building drive was also focused through her steadfast work on political causes, including campaigns for President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry. Ghouls and goblins of all ages will gather at Mount Mercy University on Sunday, October 27 to celebrate Halloween on the Hill.  Families from local nonprofit agencies along with university staff and volunteers will gather to enjoy snacks, crafts and games in Hennessey Recreation Center’s gymnasium at 5:00 p.m. before trick-or-treating at Regina and McAuley, two student residence halls on campus.

Nearly 300 guests are expected to attend the 71st NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet in Cedar Rapids on October 26.  Mount Mercy University is proud to partner in sponsorship of this annual awareness-building event. “Mount Mercy is pleased to support NAACP’s efforts,” states Dr. Jan Handler, provost.  “Their advocacy toward social justice is steadfast and one we can all stand behind.”
Math Day at Mount Mercy University

High school students from area schools attended the 16th Annual Mount Mercy Mathematics Contest on October 18, 2013 and competed in a variety of math challenges in areas such as speed, accuracy and story problems. Twenty-five teams totaling 100 students represented some of the best mathmatical talent among nine Eastern Iowa high schools.

Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic

The Gerald and Audrey Olson Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic at Mount Mercy University opened to clients last week. The clinic offers low-cost mental health counseling services to the public, while providing hands-on, supervised training for graduate students in Mount Mercy’s marriage and family therapy (MFT) program. Mount Mercy offers the only program in Iowa that is training entry level MFT practitioners, and this clinic is the only Iowa MFT clinic that is fully staffed by student therapists who are under the supervision of licensed MFT therapists.
