Students and staff from nine Sisters of Mercy-sponsored colleges and universities across the United States, including Mount Mercy, converged in Washington, D.C. May 20-24 to learn first-hand about advocacy from the Sisters of Mercy.

Mount Mercy University students teamed up with Hawkeye Area Council, Boy Scouts of America to mentor area Scouts throughout the spring semester, culminating in a special campout that was held May 11-13 on Mount Mercy’s campus.

Mount Mercy University is pleased to announce that Acting Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Melody Graham is one of 20 senior academic administrators in higher education nationwide selected by the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Academic Leadership Institute to participate in the 2012 Colloquium on Leadership for Chief Academic Officers: Classical and Contemporary Reading. Through an examination of classic and contemporary readings, the Colloquium will help participants reflect on power, ethics, and responsibility and strengthen their leadership skills.

Mount Mercy junior accounting major Jodi Burgess was the recipient of a scholarship awarded by the Iowa Accounting Leadership Summit held at the University of Iowa this spring. Burgess, from Cedar Rapids, attended the conference along with senior accounting major Lesa Caspers from Vinton, Iowa; senior accounting major Carrie Werning from Vinton; and Associate Professor of Accounting Steve Gilmour.

This year's honorees from Mount Mercy include: Carol James Haendler '81, of Cedar Rapids, employed at St. Luke's Hospital; Janet Allie Hosking '96, of Cedar Rapids, employed by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; Deborah Rathbun Kohler '98, of Marion, employed at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; Carolyn Gagnon March '98, of Marion, employed at Mercy Medical Center Cedar Rapids; Sarah Schumacher Ryan '03, of Dubuque, employed at Finley Hospital; and Kathy Takes Schneider '80, of West Burlington, employed at Burlington Community School District.

Brennan Bogert, from Regina High School in Iowa City, Iowa, was the grand prize winner, earning an Apple Ipad®. Second place went to Sarah Mork, from Marion High School in Marion, Iowa, and third place went to Marissa Bouska, from North Fayette High School in Hawkeye, Iowa.

Mount Mercy University alumnus Nate Klein ’07 has been awarded the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) National Alumnus of the Year Award. The award recognizes the achievement of one outstanding SIFE Alumnus who has used his or her SIFE experiences to excel in life and in his or her chosen career, and who has continued to make a difference in the lives of others.
