On the eve of Mercy and Mission Week, an occasion celebrated by Mercy schools across the country, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the meaning and value of Mercy. When the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Iowa with a desire to follow in the footsteps of Catherine McAuley and to serve "wherever human needs exist," they focused their energies on seeing to the needs of the sick and the poor and providing education to improve lives. Mount Mercy students in the Honors Student Association participated in “Trick or Canning” this past Halloween to raise canned goods for the Catherine McAuley Center.  Students went door-to-door on Halloween night and asked for canned donations.  The event is an annual tradition, and enables students to participate in servant leadership and volunteerism to benefit a non-profit organization in the community.
