Human trafficking is an issue of critical concern for the Sisters of Mercy, and January is a national month of awareness on the subject. In simplest terms, human trafficking is the forceful dealing of human beings into sexual exploits or labor forces. As one of three Sisters of Mercy sponsored ministries in Cedar Rapids, Mount Mercy University embraces every opportunity to fold the Sisters’ critical concern into student and community enlightenment.

Sixteen Mount Mercy University students enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program are traveling to Punta Gorda, Belize, to work for the common good and development of the country this week. Students will partner with entrepreneurs in the country to enhance development of five different businesses, varying in services from solar dried fruit to an Internet café. Punta Gorda is the southernmost sizable town in Belize with a population of approximately 5,500 people representing seven ethnic groups.

Mount Mercy’s MBA program, while steeped in classroom knowledge, demands that its students learn a practical side to business and management. The Capstone course, a students’ final course in the MBA program, offer students hands-on, relevant experience gained through working with and supporting local Corridor-based businesses. Courses such as Principles of Project Management and Entrepreneurial Endeavors encourage outreach and help to facilitate connections between MBA students and local business leaders.

Mount Mercy University is offering information sessions about its graduate programs in October and November. Graduate programs available include Master of Business Administration, Master of Marriage and Family Therapy, Master of Science in Nursing, and Master of Arts in Education. Classes are held on weeknights and/or Saturdays, accommodating busy, working adults.

Mount Mercy MBA students in Professor of Business Kathryn Coulter’s Business Ethics class partnered with the non-profit organization Kids Against Hunger to help raise money and package more than 6,000 meals for hunger relief efforts in Haiti.
