In recognition of March as Social Work Month, Mount Mercy’s Social Work Organization and Social Work Program will host a student and alumni reception on Monday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Flaherty Community Room, Basile Hall on the Mount Mercy College Campus.

Mount Mercy students are packing their bags, gathering tools, and preparing to depart on March 19 and 20 for Spring Break service trips as they prepare to live out the institution’s mission to serve those in need.  More than 20 students and staff will leave on March 20 for a Spring Break service trip to San Juan, Texas March 20 – 28. The group will repair houses and construct homes for low-income families in the area during the annual trip.

Mount Mercy College has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.More than 1,000 Mount Mercy students participated in forms of community service last year, which included service projects both inside and outside their academic learning, which accumulated to more than 12,000 hours of service work.

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Mount Mercy students set out to volunteer with local agencies dedicated to bettering the community through service and volunteerism. In all, more than 40 students volunteered their time and energy to serve in a variety of capacities, from mucking and gutting flood-effected houses with the Block by Block program, to painting and remodeling for Aid to Women.

Mount Mercy College will host a ceremony celebrating the value of service in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 18 at 9:00 a.m. in Hennessey Recreation Center.Mount Mercy President Christopher Blake will welcome the community. Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett will serve as guest speaker, as well as Dedric Doolin, president of the Cedar Rapids branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Mount Mercy College announced today the appointment of Sr. Shari Sutherland RSM as executive director for Mercy mission and identity, effective January 1, 2010. As executive director, Sr. Sutherland will report to Mount Mercy President Christopher Blake and supervise the Office of Campus Ministry, collaborate with faculty and staff to foster the institution’s mission and identity, and work to infuse and integrate Mount Mercy’s key foundational characteristics into all aspects of campus life and ministry.
