Mount Mercy's Professor of Biology and Department Chair Dr. Neil Bernstein led students in a grass planting in the spring of 2012 on the hill of Basile Hall. The environmentally friendly "no mow grass" will keep away erosion and doesn't requiring mowing in most circumstances. Dr. Bernstein shared with the group that the toxins and vapors released from 30 seconds of using a push mower equals roughly five minutes of driving a car.
This endeavor was supported by the Sisters of Mercy Ministry Grant for Sustainability.

Mount Mercy University hosted a STEM Moms Night out celebrating moms and other caregivers on April 23. This state-wide event in collaboration with the Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership encourages educating youth in science, technology, engineering and math.

Students from Mount Mercy University, Coe College, and Kirkwood Community College came together Saturday, April 14, for Cedar Rapids Dance Marathon held on the Mount Mercy campus. The students raised funds for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
Senior nursing students from Mount Mercy University as well as nursing alums gathered for a special luncheon on Thursday, April 5, to celebrate the partnership between students and alumni working in the field. Erin Templeton '07 gave a special keynote address about her experience in nursing.

Mount Mercy hosted William Penn on March 21 for a doubleheader. After holding on for a 1-0 victory in the opener, William Penn forced extra innings and then scored three times in the ninth to beat Mount Mercy, 7-4, in game two of the Midwest Collegiate Conference softball opener at Tomahawk Park.
Mount Mercy University students constructed sculptures out of recyclable material at Green Club Friday on March 2. Club Friday is held every week at Mount Mercy to help kick off the weekend! This Club Friday was organized by G.R.E.E.N. Outdoor Recreation Club to promote sustainability and the RecycleMania competition taking place on campus.

Mount Mercy alumni couples gathered at Bricks Bar & Grill for a special Valentine's Day event this year. The event provided an opportunity for alumni to mingle and share their stories over good food and drinks.
Mount Mercy's Last Person Standing competition allows students to compete in a friendly competition to win free housing on campus! The endurance game challenges students to remain standing for 24 hours with their hands on a playhouse -- don't get distracted on tired, because if that hand comes off you are out of the game! Hats off to all our participating students this year, and to our wonderful Hall Directors for their supervision and organization!
Mount Mercy's annual Poverty Simulation provided students in the STEPS leadership program with an incredible opportunity to strengthen their understanding of what it means to live in poverty. This unique role-playing game provided students with the chance to walk in the shoes of characters that live in poverty. Armed with new identities, students went to work, raised their children, and did their best to pay their bills on time. The simulation covered 4 weeks of life within the time span of an hour (1 week =15 minutes of “real world” time).
The Mount Mercy women’s basketball team earned the 800th win in the program’s history during the 2011-12 season, and we celebrated during Saturday’s doubleheader on January 21! Loved having alumni back on campus for this special event!
