Janalyn Hanson White Gallery to display contemporary Nepalese art

Mount Mercy University will feature the exhibit “Namaste Nepal! Contemporary Artist Voices,” March 8 – April 7 in Janalyn Hanson White Gallery. The exhibit includes the contemporary artwork of: Binod Shrestha, Ashmina Ranjit, Sujan Chitrakar, Hitman Gurung, Mekh Limbu, Asha Dangol and Supriya Manandhar.

The exhibit is open for viewing Mondays through Fridays from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Viewings outside of regular gallery hours may be arranged by checking out a key from the University Center’s Information Desk.

An artist talk with Shrestha will be held on Friday, March 8, from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., in which Shrestha will offer a background on the political turmoil that is a common theme in Nepalese art. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

The majority of the artwork that will be displayed in the gallery has been collected by Mount Mercy’s Associate Professor of Art Kathryn Hagy during trips to Nepal. The artwork expresses the struggle for identity in a country coming out of civil war.

For additional information on this exhibit, contact Hagy at khagy@mtmercy.edu or call 319-363-1323 ext. 1225.
