Mount Mercy student newspaper receives eight media awards

Mount Mercy’s student newspaper, the Mount Mercy Times, was the recipient of eight awards at the annual Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) Better Newspaper contest during the ICMA convention held in Des Moines on February 2.

The Mount Mercy Times has continued a tradition of excellence in college journalism as the recipient of multiple awards from ICMA throughout the years. The student-run newspaper broke the university’s record in 2011, bringing home 11 awards.

Students were most recognized for their work in news, multimedia videos, and blogging this year.

Award highlights from content produced between November 1, 2010, and October 31, 2011, include:

  • Honorable mention, Best Opinion Writing by Ryan Pleggenkuhle, editor in chief
  • Second place, Best Explanatory or Interpretive News Story by Cynthia Petersen, Web editor
  • Third place, Best Explanatory or Interpretive News Story by Jennifer Koehighain, campus editor
  • Fourth place, Best Multimedia Slide Show by Cindy Petersen, Web editor; and Mariah Cary, assistant business manager
  • Second place, Best Online Video by Sophia Fuchs, TV editor
  • Second place, Best Blog by Cynthia Petersen, Web editor
  • Third place, Best Blog by Jennifer Koenighain, campus editor
  • Fourth place, Best Blog by Jenna Marzen, staff writer

The 2011-2012 staff members for Mount Mercy Times include: senior Ryan Pleggenkuhle, editor in chief, from Cedar Rapids; senior Elizabeth Brumm, managing editor, from Cedar Falls, Iowa; senior Jennifer Koenighain, campus editor, from Marion, Iowa; senior Erich Pilcher, multi-media producer, from Cedar Rapids; sophomore Maddy Jones, sports editor, from Hudson, Iowa; senior Cynthia Petersen, Web editor, from Cedar Rapids; senior Namrata Raghvani, design editor, from Kenya; senior Ben Wood, business manager, from Cascade, Iowa; sophomore Neil Lefebure, work study, from Fairfax, Iowa; junior Jenny Valliere, video editor, from Cedar Rapids; senior Sophia Fuchs, TV editor, from Hollywood, Calif.; junior Jenna Marzen, staff writer, from Cedar Rapids; and junior Mariah Cary, assistant business manager, from Burlington, Iowa. Mount Mercy Associate Professor of Communications Joe Sheller serves as the faculty advisor to the student newspaper.
