‘New Works in Clay’ exhibit opens at Mount Mercy

Mount Mercy University's Janalyn Hanson White Gallery will display the work of JoAnn Schnabel during a special exhibit titled "New Works in Clay." The exhibit will run September 6 – 28. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

In conjunction with the Iowa Clay Conference, a reception will be held on Saturday, September 17 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the gallery.

A special artist talk will be held on Tuesday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m. in the lower level of Lundy Commons in room Lundy 3, followed by a reception for the artist at 9:00 p.m. in the gallery.

In an artist statement, Schnabel refers to her teapot exhibit as "Whimsical, mostly oversized, and fun to make. They allow me to play with referencing the vessel without concerns in form for function, which allows for exaggerated spouts and handles."

Often finding inspiration in her garden, Schnabel's pots are glazed in inviting colors and surface patterns that reference nature, and often have areas of unglazed clay.

Schnabel serves as a professor of art at the University of Northern Iowa. She attended New York State College of Ceramics, earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University and a Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University. Through her work at the University of Northern Iowa, Schnabel believes in students learning the basic skills of different ways of working with clay and then using those skills to pursue work they are personally interested in.

Schnabel's ceramic sculptures have been shown at museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, Mass., The Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., which was held in conjunction with the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts 2006 Annual Conference.

Mount Mercy's Janalyn Hanson White Gallery serves as a special venue to showcase regional and national artists, students' capstone projects, the local talent of area high schools, and many other exhibitors. Thanks to an endowment from the Tim and Jan White Family, the Gallery has been renovated and offers enhanced exhibition space. The gallery has month-long exhibitions of nationally and regionally known artists who apply years in advance to exhibit in the gallery. In recent months, exhibitions of painting, drawing, digital video interactive works, installation, fiber arts, printmaking, sculpture and video by artists from New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Mexico, and London have been on display in the gallery.
