Mount Mercy alumna debuts new concept for children’s literature

Mount Mercy alumna Marjorie (Marge) Schinke '99 has blended her passion for children's literature and graphic design by founding a new organization called "Big Letter Books for Children."

As the author of a brand new book, Creation Story Reader, Schinke introduces a new concept to children's books – large print that is ¾ inches high for easy recognition in even very young children.

Creation Story Reader showcases oversized font in bold black and red letters, colors that small babies find easily recognizable. Illustrated by Schinke's sister, Doris, the book is full of beautiful illustrations that appear on every other page, alternating with the text so young readers can fully absorb the words without the distraction of illustrations.

Inspired by the writing of author Glen Doman, who argued that little children could learn to read if the print was larger, Schinke's new book brings to life this unique new concept for babies and preschool children.

Schinke credits her training as a graphic design artist at Mount Mercy for enabling her to realize her vision of publishing the book. "I never would have had the confidence or skills to put the book together without the training I received at Mount Mercy," she says.

Already, work is being done to publish the book into other languages, including Spanish.

A book signing with the author will be held on Saturday, July 23 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Parable/Lemstone Christian Store, 1426 Twixt Town Road, Marion, Iowa.
