Mount Mercy’s Busse Library presents “An Hour with a Poet” during its monthly book club, “Bring Your Own Book” on Friday, April 9 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Busse Library viewing room. Refreshments will be provided.
This month Mount Mercy will welcome retired English Professor Jim McKean, Ph.D., to share information on the current projects he has underway. McKean will discuss his work in essays and poetry, as well as share his continued research on his family’s legacy in Olympic history.
McKean retired from teaching English at Mount Mercy in 2009. He holds a Ph.D. from The University of Iowa and is a graduate of the prestigious University of Iowa Writers Workshop. His first book of poems, Headlong, won the Great Lakes Colleges New Writer Award in Poetry, and his second, Tree of Heaven, won an Iowa Poetry Prize. His poems have appeared in Poetry, The Atlantic Monthly, Prairie Schooner, and The Southern Review. His nonfiction has appeared in The Gettysburg Review, Gray’s Sporting Journal, The Iowa Review, andThe Best American Sports Writing 2003. His memoir, Home Stand, was published by Michigan State University Press in 2005.
