One editor says good night and good luck

By Corey Munson - Editor

In the Mount Mercy Times office, on the wall, a few inches behind the monitor of the computer I usually sit at, is pinned a cut out from last year’s paper. On the cut out is the picture and name of the Times staff (minus Erika Brighi who came on board second semester).

There are 11 faces on that piece of paper, of those, nine are either graduating or have left the paper. That leaves two people from our original staff that will still be around Mount Mercy next fall.

Over the next few months, Brian Heinemann, editor elect for 2008-2009, will have the monumental task of arriving at a new school and effectively building a staff from the ground up. I do not envy him the task at hand.

It is my sincere hope that I have left Brian and the future staff of the Times with a quality product, and I am really looking forward to seeing what they come up with next year.

If there is any advice I have to give to next year’s staff, it is to remind them that the Times’ speaks for the student body.

We are a diverse group that gathers in lower Lundy on Mondays and Fridays. This diversity is essential to our ability to stay in touch with the widest possible range of students, and I think we are fairly different from many other groups on campus because of this. Once again, we are here to speak for the student body.

The involvement from campus this year has been overwhelming and much appreciated. The fact that many of you took the time and cared enough to disagree with the paper is amazing to me. Keep up the good work, keep reading and keep talking.

This is the part of the column where I get to rattle off a bunch of thank yous, so please bare with me a bit.

First to the staff of this year’s paper for sticking with me through everything and specifically our Business managers Maggie Wright and Toni Bubb for keeping us in business.

To the Communications and Marketing department and Molly and Stacey specifically for being a window into the inner workings of the college for us.

To Dr. Blake and his administration for providing us with an endless stream of changes around campus to cover and for always being willing to talk to us about them.

To Emily Muhlbach and Bob Jameson for being our sugar and spice.

To the communications department: Dr. David Klope and Joe Sheller.

To my family for letting me find my own path, and supporting me once I’d found it.

To my friends, sorry I haven’t been around much the last couple years, call me next week, we’ll hang out.

To all the faculty, staff and students who let us interview and sometimes misquote them.

And finally to our faithful readers on and off campus, thank you for your interest.
