The mathematics program at  Mount Mercy will give you insight into the nature of mathematics as an intellectual discipline. A fundamental understanding of math will help you develop powers of clear and logical thinking, accuracy, flexibility in problem solving, and clarity and precision in expressing mathematical ideas. Students may pursue either a major or minor in mathematics.

A study of mathematics also prepares the prospective teacher to give a sound basis for those who plan to pursue graduate studies, and to provide a background in computing for those who wish to pursue opportunities in that field.

In addition to academics, the department sponsors the mathematics club. Its purpose is to advance the study and enjoyment of mathematics at Mount Mercy, and in the surrounding communities. Club activities include the Mount Mercy High School Mathematics Competition, tutoring students from local schools, a trip to the Iowa sectional meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, and monthly club and campus-wide problem solving activities.
