Professor of Nursing Mary Tarbox has been on the Mount Mercy nursing faculty since 1977. She serves as the Nursing Department Chair. Prior to coming to Mount Mercy she worked as a pediatric nurse at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, and in various public health nursing roles.
Dr. Tarbox belongs to the American and Iowa Nurses Association, the Association for the History of Nursing, Kappa Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Aging Services, and the Catherine McAuley Center in Cedar Rapids. She is also a member of the Nursing Interventions Classification research team at the University of Iowa. Her research interest focuses on the history of nursing, with an emphasis on religious women in nursing history.
She has been recognized as one of the 100 Great Nurses of Iowa for 2008, and was awarded the Iowa Nurses Association Region 2 Nurse of the Year award in 2007. She participates in a wide variety of service projects, including volunteering at the Catherine McAuley Center. Tarbox has accompanied students on a service trip to the Navajo reservation in Arizona, where they worked in a school for developmentally disabled children.
She enjoys traveling with her husband, and meeting with Mount Mercy alumni who were international students while on those travels.
