Journals, Magazines, Newspapers & Other Databases

This selection of indexes, publications and full-text databases will fulfill most college assignments requiring access to journals, magazines, newspapers, research and factual information. Some are only accessible on the MMC campus network. If you find an article which we do not own nor have available online, complete an MMC Interlibrary Loan Request (An e-mail service for MMC students, faculty and staff), or pick up a form at the Reference Desk. Your may initiate ILL requests from the EBSCO and FirstSearch databases. Contact the Reference Librarian for general assistance with any of these databases.

Off-Campus Users - Students, faculty and staff may access selected Busse Library databases and periodical indexes off campus through your secure personalized ICampus Accounts.  Select the Library Tab on your ICampus page. It provides you with the necessary passwords for off campus use. There are general and specialized collections of databases for your use.

General Multi-discipline Indexes, Publications & Databases

  • EBSCOhost - On the next page select the group of EBSCOhost databases of special relevance to your discipline or major.   The top link searches the five largest databases. On the search page put in your search term(s) and select appropriate limiters. Scholarly and Peer Reviewed are important limiters for many college assignments. You may also limit to fulltext which points you to publications in Busse or available online at EBSCO. Individual EBSCOhost databases and other databases may be searched by finding them further down on this library page.
     
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic  - This is a large collection of full text databases.  There are five tabs.
    The default is the General tab for publications, news services, transcripts, blogs and other information sources.
    Select the News tab for a variety of news sources.
    Select the Legal tab for the legal sources.
    Select the Business tab for company information.
    Select the People tab for biographical information.
     
  • CQ Researcher - Each issue covers a topical contemporary issue and is a good term paper resource. Also available in print in Busse Library.
  • LexisNexis Congressional  - US legislative histories, reports, bill tracking,  testimony, US Code, federal regulations,  public policy hot topics, etc.
  • NewsBank - Search over 500 U.S. newspaper including: Cedar Rapids Gazette (full-text articles from 1992 to date) and Des Moines Register (full-text articles from 1999 to date).
  • Academic Search Complete from EBSCOhost.
  • Newspaper Source from EBSCO - full-text to 245 information sources including 171 regional U.S. newspapers, 20 international newspapers, 15 newswires and newspaper columns, 24 TV and radio news transcripts, The Christian Science Monitor, The Los Angeles Times and USA Today.
  • Oxford English Dictionary - online version to extensive etymological dictionary. Also in print in Reference area.
  • Encyclopedia Britannica - complete electronic version of Encyclopedia Britannica plus many other information resources. Excellent directory to WWW resources on many topics.
  • Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia from EBSCO - complete online encyclopedia.  To search broad subjects, choose the Guided Search and limit your search to the Title field. 
  • WorldCat - over 30 million catalog records of books and audiovisuals held in libraries around the world. A good way to see if a book has been published on a topic. If Busse Library does not own it, you may submit an interlibrary loan request. Select books with at least 15 library holdings indicated, to increase chances of borrowing it.

Business

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic  - This is a large collection of full text databases useful for business searches.  
  • Business Source Premier from EBSCO - citation database to over 3200 scholarly journals and business periodicals covering management, economics, finance, accounting, international business, etc. Includes links to full-text articles from over 2800 publications. 
  • Business Source Elite from EBSCO - citation database to over 1100 business periodicals including full-text articles.  
  • Regional Business News from EBSCO - full text database of world wide business news.
  • Congressional Universe - Congressional Record, reports, bill tracking, testimony, hot topics, etc.

Education

  • American National Biography - over 18,000 online biographies and associated links.
  • Encyclopedia Britannica -complete electronic version of Encyclopedia Britannica plus many other information resources. Excellent directory to WWW resources on many topics.
  • ERIC from FirstSearch - index to education journals and documents since 1966. - To get only journals, on the Search page select: Limit to: Document Type Journal (CIJE).
  • ERIC from EBSCO - same database, different vendor - You may also limit your searches to journals only.
  • ERIC - at the US Department of Education
  • Middle Search Plus from EBSCO - useful to middle school and junior high teachers. Indexes 170 general reference, health and science magazines with full-text to 140 magazines. 
  • Primary Search from EBSCO - useful for elementary teachers. Indexes 80 children's magazines with full-text to 50 magazines. Also includes: The World Almanac of the U.S.A. and The World Almanac for Kids; The Encyclopedia of Animals; Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia; and full text for over 100 pamphlets.
  • Professional Development Collection from EBSCO - 585 well-known professional development titles for teachers, and searchable full text for 504 journals covering the most current topics in education.
  • PsycINFO  from EBSCO - index to psychological scholarly journal articles, books, chapters, technical reports and dissertations from 1887 to the present.
