Educause has published a
set of guidelines for families exploring the use of information technology
on a college campus. Mount Mercy College encourages students and their
families to learn about the use of information and learning technologies
here on this campus.
The following list includes Mount Mercy
College's answers to many of the questions:
- Students use electronically delivered
information in almost all courses taught here because access to current
periodical indexes and other databases is over the WWW. Faculty
may put copies of their syllabi and other course materials, including
tests, online. The library has resource web pages for all
departments on campus and for many specific courses.
- All students may request a campus email
address.
- The library and academic computer center
provide campus wide access to a wealth of electronic sources and to the
wider WWW over the campus network. There are several computer mini-labs
across campus as well as computers in the library, the computer center,
computer classroom and media center. Dorm rooms are connected to the
network.
- There are workshops, tutorials and personal
instruction available to all students. Several entry level courses
involving learning technologies are available and sometimes required in
specific majors.
- The library has extensive access to
electronically stored information including a large collection of
periodical indexes and Desktop Reference webpages.
- Off campus access to selected electronic
resources from the library is provided.
- All faculty and staff have computers in
their offices and use email for college administrative
communication. A growing number also communicate with their
students using email so it is recommended that students have personal
email accounts.
- The College Admissions
Office web page has online application
forms.
- The College Catalog and Course Schedules are
online.
- Students may purchase textbooks from the
College Bookstore online.
- A campus charge card can be used for food
service and the bookstore.
- All students have access to computers for
personal and academic use on campus. The ratio is approximately 1
college computer for every 11 students. In addition many students have
own machines.
- The college has a web page directory of
faculty and staff email and office addresses. Student information
is not publicly available.
- The college information technology
acceptable use policy is available here.
- Students who want to attach their personal
computers to the campus network must purchase a network card which is
installed by the college information technology staff.
- Computers and software are continuously
upgraded with the newest machines in the computer center and computer
classroom for student use.
- Currently there is no charge for printing in
the library and computer center.
Some of the questions in the Educause guide are
not relevant to Mount Mercy College because student privacy is strongly
protected and such data is not collected. Personal privacy and
intellectual freedom are respected and personal responsibility is
encouraged in all activities of the college.
