NOTEBOOK - NOTE #A6: PRINT
PERIODICAL INDEXES
There are some periodical indexes and
related materials which are published in several formats -- print,
online and sometimes cd-rom. Some only exist in one format.
Libraries may own or have access to several format types. This
bibliography includes print indexes which are found in the Busse
Library. Some include periodicals not found in our online indexes
and databases. Most index periodicals which are also indexed on the
electronic products. All are useful, especially when the computers
are down or the World Wide Web particularly slow. Ask a Reference
Librarian for advice on use of the print indexes.
A.C.M. GUIDE TO COMPUTING
LITERATURE -- Includes citations of journal articles along with
books, conference proceedings, reports, etc. Information is indexed
by author, keywords from the titles, category (subject) and proper
noun (names of computer language, hardware model). The contents of
books and journals are listed in separate sections.
ABRIDGED INDEX MEDICUS -- This index is designed to provide rapid access
to a subset of the biomedical literature for the medical
practitioner. One hundred nineteen journals makeup this set. All
journals may not be indexed in a given month. Emphasis is on
clinical medicine. The Subject Section will be of use. It uses the
Medical Subject Headings of the National Library of
Medicine.
AMERICA HISTORY & LIFE -- An
index of journal articles, books, dissertations and book reviews on
the history of the U.S. and Canada. Also available
online.
ART INDEX -- Art is defined to include film, photography,
architecture, landscape design as well as two and three dimensional
studio art works and art history. It indexes more than 230
periodicals and museum publications. The periodicals indexed are
listed in the front of each issue. Persons and subjects are
indexed.
BIBLIOGRAPHIC INDEX -- Includes
citations to bibliographies of information about subjects, persons
and places. Most of the bibliographies are in book or booklet form
though some of the bibliographies cited are in periodicals. This is
a useful source for older material because of the time lag in
publication. Each issue concentrates on bibliographies produced in
the preceding five years. A list of the periodicals with their
abbreviations appears in the front.
BIOGRAPHY INDEX -- Citations to
biographies in general periodicals and some books are included. It
is a good starting place for detailed information about persons,
living or dead, as it is comprehensive. The periodicals cited are
listed in full at the front of each issue.
BIOLOGICAL AND AGRICULTURAL INDEX
-- Over 200 biology and agricultural research periodicals are
indexed. They are listed at the front of each issue. Subjects and
topic phrases are alphabetically arranged.
BOOK REVIEW DIGEST -- Reviews of
English language books sold in the USA and Canada are cited. Only
books with at least two (non-fiction) or three (fiction) reviews are
included. Excerpts from the reviews are printed for each author.
There is a subject and title index to the citations and
excerpts.
BUSINESS PERIODICALS INDEX -- This
database indexes many of the same journals and magazines as does the
electronic versions of Business Index. Business Periodicals Index
has more specific subject headings and you may expand the pool of
articles on a topic by using both indexes.
CATHOLIC PERIODICAL & LITERATURE
INDEX -- As its title states, this indexes approximately 140
Catholic periodicals and selected book titles. It has a detailed
subject heading index.
CRIMINOLOGY, PENOLOGY AND POLICE
SCIENCE ABSTRACTS -- The abstracts are arranged in nine broad
categories: criminology and other disciplines, offenses and deviant
behavior, victim, juvenile justice and delinquency, criminal law,
crime policy, police, courts, corrections. The subject and author
indexes provide entry numbers which lead to the abstracts. These
topics are of wider interest than just criminology and the index is
useful for many courses.
CUMULATIVE INDEX TO NURSING &
ALLIED HEALTH LITERATURE (CINAHL) -- It indexes sections or all
of many periodicals, some of which are not indexed by MEDLINE. In
addition to the Medical Subject Headings of the National Library of
Medicine, CINAHL uses subject terms which are currently part of the
vocabulary of nursing practice.
EDUCATION INDEX -- Over 350
education journals are indexed. Allied fields such as linguistics
and library science are also included. It also indexes some book
reviews.

individual essays found in Festschriften (a collection of writings
presented to a person to honor him/her).
FACTS ON FILE -- While published
as a world news digest for each week of the year and not as an
index, Facts on File can serve as a pointer to information indexed
in other databases. There are often factual bits of information
which are not available directly in the typical index. The names of
people connected with topical information are useful.
GENERAL SCIENCE INDEX -- This is a
subject index which lists articles from approximately 140 general
science periodicals covering a wide range of disciplines. It has
good cross references to assist the non-specialist user seeking
information in astronomy, atmospheric science, biology, botany,
chemistry, earth science, environment and conservation, food and
nutrition, genetics, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology,
oceanography, physics, physiology and zoology.

student research papers.

authors and subjects in one alphabetical arrangement. It includes:
