#A19: Using the Mental Measurements Yearbook
The Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY)series (commonly referred to as Buros) is published by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements. The mission of the Institute is to provide test descriptions, references and reviews of commercially available tests for potential test users. Each edition (there are currently 13) reviews new and significantly revised tests since the last edition to allow test users to make informed decisions about which tests to use. The Institute also publishes Tests in Print which is in its 4th edition. The 13th edition, which you will use for this exercise, has descriptive information on 369 tests and 693 test reviews. Many of the tests have bibliographies of useful references. There are several indexes: test title; classified subjects; publishers index and directory; name index of test, review and reference authors; test title acronyms; and scores. All numbers in the indexes are test numbers, not page numbers. Tests appear alphabetically by title and have a sequential number. Practitioners can use the Yearbooks to select tests for specific purposes. Some may be restricted to use by licensed psychologists and others may be administered by teachers, researchers, medical and allied health personnel. Examples: A reseacher who wants to identify hyperactivity in students finds that the MMY provides a list of established tests and measures (e.g., Conners Rating Scales; ADD-H Comprehensive Teacher's Rating Scale). A personnel psychologist who is interested in using a personality test (or inventory) to provide additional information for making hiring decisions finds the MMY to be an excellent souce before purchasing any test. The MMY provides valuable reviews of research done to support use of each test, in addition, a reviewer might point out problems regaarding the potential of discrimination if a certain test is used for making hiring decisions. The descriptive information usually includes: titles, purpose, intended population, publication date, acronym (if used), scores, administration requirements, forms, manual, distribution, price, language, time necessary, comments, author and publisher. For a complete description of contents and suggested methods of using the MMY, read the "Introduction" to the edition you are using. Go to the Reference Area to find the MMY (BF 176 M4x). 1.
