MMC NOTEBOOK - NOTE #35: Everything you ever wanted to know about PRINT PERIODICAL INDEXES There are some periodical indexes and related materials which are published in several formats -- print, cd-rom, online. Some only exist in one format. Libraries may own or have access to several format types. This bibliography includes print indexes which are found in the Busse Library. Some include periodicals not found in cd-rom or online indexes. Most index periodicals which are also indexed on the electronic products. All are useful, especially when the computers are down or the World Wide Web particularly slow. Ask a Reference Librarian for advice on use of the print indexes. A.C.M. GUIDE TO COMPUTING LITERATURE -- Includes citations of journal articles along with books, conference proceedings, reports, etc. Information is indexed by author, keywords from the titles, category (subject) and proper noun (names of computer language, hardware model). The contents of books and journals are listed in separate sections. ABRIDGED INDEX MEDICUS -- This index is designed to provide rapid access to a subset of the biomedical literature for the medical practitioner. One hundred nineteen journals makeup this set. All journals may not be indexed in a given month. Emphasis is on clinical medicine. The Subject Section will be of use. It uses the Medical Subject Headings of the National Library of Medicine. ART INDEX -- Art is defined to include film, photography, architecture, landscape design as well as two and three dimensional studio art works and art history. It indexes more than 230 periodicals and museum publications. The periodicals indexed are listed in the front of each issue. Persons and subjects are indexed. BIBLIOGRAPHIC INDEX -- Includes citations to bibliographies of information about subjects, persons and places. Most of the bibliographies are in book or booklet form though some of the bibliographies cited are in periodicals. This is a useful source for older material because of the time lag in publication. Each issue concentrates on bibliographies produced in the preceding five years. A list of the periodicals with their abbreviations appears in the front. BIOGRAPHY INDEX -- Citations to biographies in general periodicals and some books are included. It is a good starting place for detailed information about persons, living or dead, as it is comprehensive. The periodicals cited are listed in full at the front of each issue. BIOLOGICAL AND AGRICULTURAL INDEX -- Over 200 biology and agricultural research periodicals are indexed. They are listed at the front of each issue. Subjects and topic phrases are alphabetically arranged. BOOK REVIEW DIGEST -- Reviews of English language books sold in the USA and Canada are cited. Only books with at least two (non-fiction) or three (fiction) reviews are included. Excerpts from the reviews are printed for each author. There is a subject and title index to the citations and excerpts. BUSINESS PERIODICALS INDEX -- This database indexes many of the same journals and magazines as does the electronic versions of Business Index. Business Periodicals Index has more specific subject headings and you may expand the pool of articles on a topic by using both indexes. CATHOLIC PERIODICAL & LITERATURE INDEX -- As its title states, this indexes approximately 140 Catholic periodicals and selected book titles. It has a detailed subject heading index. CRIMINOLOGY, PENOLOGY AND POLICE SCIENCE ABSTRACTS -- The abstracts are arranged in nine broad categories: criminology and other disciplines, offenses and deviant behavior, victim, juvenile justice and delinquency, criminal law, crime policy, police, courts, corrections. The subject and author indexes provide entry numbers which lead to the abstracts. These topics are of wider interest than just criminology and the index is useful for many courses. CUMULATIVE INDEX TO NURSING & ALLIED HEALTH LITERATURE (CINAHL) -- It indexes sections or all of many periodicals, some of which are not indexed by MEDLINE. In addition to the Medical Subject Headings of the National Library of Medicine, CINAHL uses subject terms which are currently part of the vocabulary of nursing practice. EDUCATION INDEX -- Over 350 education journals are indexed. Allied fields such as linguistics and library science are also included. It also indexes some book reviews. ESSAY & GENERAL LITERATURE INDEX -- This is an author and subject index to essays published in collections. Subjects included are: philosophy, religion, social and political science, economics, law, education, linguistics, science, the arts, literature and history. It also indexes individual essays found in Festschriften (a collection of writings presented to a person to honor him/her). FACTS ON FILE -- While published as a world news digest for each week of the year and not as an index, Facts on File can serve as a pointer to information indexed in other databases. There are often factual bits of information which are not available directly in the typical index. The names of people connected with topical information are useful. GENERAL SCIENCE INDEX -- This is a subject index which lists articles from approximately 140 general science periodicals covering a wide range of disciplines. It has good cross references to assist the non-specialist user seeking information in astronomy, atmospheric science, biology, botany, chemistry, earth science, environment and conservation, food and nutrition, genetics, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, oceanography, physics, physiology and zoology. HIGHER EDUCATION ABSTRACTS -- Issues related to college and university education and life are indexed. Citations on student health, social issues and non-traditional students are among those which are useful for student research papers. HUMANITIES INDEX -- Extensive indexing of periodicals in the arts and humanities is done with authors and subjects in one alphabetical arrangement. It includes: feature articles, obituaries, bibliographies, works of fiction, poetry, drama and reviews of plays, operas, ballets, dance, musicals, films, videos, TV and radio. It is a good source for critical thought on the contemporary scene. MLA INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY -- The Library has the print version of this index to books and articles on the modern languages and literatures up through 1987. NEW YORK TIMES INDEX -- This print index is the guide to the New York Times on microfilm. The entries include names, geographical locations, issues, and all manner of subjects. It's completeness makes it useful in following the progress of an issue or event over time. The stories published in this newspaper also give an indication of the time period in which stories appeared in other newspapers around the country. It provides the date, section, page and column location of each article. Busse Library has the NYT on microfilm from 1960 onward. 19TH CENTURY READERS' GUIDE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE -- Some of the periodicals indexed are still in existence. Many issues of importance today were also written about in the 19th century. Articles may be ordered through Interlibrary Loan. PSYCHOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS -- This extensive index and abstract publication offers information useful in all disciplines and for a wide range of interests beyond psychology and its related disciplines. Psychological principles and human behavior have implications in all endeavors. There are 16 broad subject categories with narrower topics in each. Over 1400 periodicals from approximately 50 countries are indexed. The index is accompanied by a Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms to assist in searching its terminology. READERS' GUIDE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE -- This most familiar of indexes provides direction to authors and subjects found in general interest periodicals. It is regarded as among the easiest to use. Citations, cross references, and the complete names of periodicals in the citation contribute to this. It is especially useful for contemporary societal issues. RELIGIOUS AND THEOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS -- This index and abstract publication is divided into four main categories: biblical, theological, historical, and practical. Within these are sections on world religions, religion and culture, and sociology. Many of the journals are not commonly indexed by other indexing services. Use this to add another dimension to your search for information. SOCIAL SCIENCES INDEX -- Periodicals in the fields of anthropology, community health and medicine, economics, geography, international relations, law, criminology & police science, political science, psychology and psychiatry, public administration, sociology & social work and other related subjects are indexed. Selected book reviews in these fields are also indexed. SOCIAL WORK RESEARCH & ABSTRACTS -- This unusual periodical includes full text short research articles and abstracts of previously published articles on social work and related fields. A typical issue will have five or six articles 400 abstracts. Both a subject and an author index to the abstracts is provided. THE WALL STREET JOURNAL INDEX -- Brief annotations and extensive indexing of all articles in the 3-Star Eastern edition of the Wall Street Journal are provided on a monthly and quarterly basis. It is divided into two sections: corporate news and general news. The subject headings are from the UMI controlled vocabulary. There are subheadings. The Library has past issues (since 1987) of the Wall Street Journal on microfilm. WILDLIFE REVIEW -- Wildlife and related literatures are indexed. Subject areas include: conservation, wildlife, mammals, carnivores, birds, amphibians and reptiles, with sub-headings. Author, geographical, subject, and specialized systemic indexes for mammals, birds and amphibians/reptiles are provided. There are usually several book reviews. Every effort is made to keep the links to the Busse Library Webpage current and relevant to the library's mission. It is your responsibility to evaluate the quality of information found. Some may be outdated, inaccurate or personally offensive. Parents are advised to monitor their children's use of these resources. US Copyright Law applies to materials published and accessed.
