Director of Human Resources

This position reports to the Vice President for Finance and is responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the Human Resources function. Areas of responsibility include employee relations, employment and recruitment, payroll, compensation, benefits, performance management, staff development, employee health and wellness programs, employment policies and compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws. The Director supervises the Payroll Manager.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creates a vision for human resources functions that corresponds with and supports the University’s Strategic Plan.
  • Plans, organizes and manages the activities of the department.  Develops departmental goals and makes recommendations to Vice President for Finance for improvement of University policies, procedures and practices pertaining to human resources and payroll matters.
  • Works with leaders at all levels regarding employee relations, employment and recruitment, compensation, job descriptions, performance management, staff development and employment policies. 
  • Responsible for University compliance with federal, state and local laws pertaining to all human resources and payroll matters.  Consults with legal counsel and tax experts as appropriate.
  • Assists the Vice President for Finance in cost-effective management of benefit programs.  Serves as the primary contact with the University’s insurance broker.
  • Serves as the committee chair of the Employee Benefits Committee.
  • Recommends, evaluates and delivers staff development training and health and wellness programs.
  • Provides consultation and customer service to the campus community on all employee benefit services. 
  • Serves as back-up to the Payroll Manager to ensure all payroll function deadlines are met should the Payroll Manager be absent.
  • Prepares and issues faculty contracts.
  • Serves as the Equal Opportunity Officer and Title IX Co-Coordinator for the University.
  • Completes annual compensation surveys, such as CUPA, IPEDS, IAICU, etc.
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as needed or assigned.

We are seeking candidates with at least 5 years of successful HR management experience and a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of relevant experience and education.  A Master’s Degree and PHR or SPHR certification preferred.  Experience in higher education a plus. This position requires proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills. S/he must demonstrate well-reasoned, sound judgment and a collaborative decision-making style. Must have the ability to collect and analyze data as well as complex financial information.
