Search Engines

Search the WWW using Search Engines & Directories

Use more than one of the search engines and directories included here when searching for academic or recreational information. They vary in how they search and what they have in their indexes. Many have cached the web pages on their own servers and may not have the latest version of the page. They may bring up different but equally useful files. Several are quite specialized search engines for specific resources. Search engine homepages often have search tips and advanced features. Read and use them. You are able to query some of the engines directly from this web page.

Recommended starting points are:

  • GOOGLE - very good (probably the best) all round search engine for academic information
  • ALL THE WEB - another good search engine

These may be useful for specific kinds of academic information and for general recreational searching:

For instructions on how to cite information found on the WWW, use the bibliographic style notes on the MMC NOTEBOOK Web page. Other guides for finding, evaluating, citing and using information are also linked to this web page.
