Mount Mercy University’s Art Program has 3 full time faculty and several adjunct instructors offering courses to serve 30 BA-degree students in four majors: Fine Art with an emphasis in 2D or 3D, Graphic Design, Art Education and Visual Arts/Business Interdisciplinary. Students in other programs such as Communications, Marketing and Computer Science also enroll in the program’s Graphic Design courses. The Art program is strongly rooted in conceptual development and provides the artistic and practical knowledge required by future art professionals or those who continue to graduate school.


Mount Mercy University seeks a full time, tenure track Assistant Professor specializing in graphic design. Position begins August 2012 and is a 3/4 course load with an additional 3 credits toward development of professional scholarship and maintenance of Macintosh computer lab (dependent on skills). Teaching responsibilities include sections of basic design, beginning and advanced graphic design, typography, visual technology (Creative Suite), web & motion graphics, and special topics courses dependent on applicant’s areas of expertise/interest and departmental need such as study-abroad courses, art appreciation, color theory, design history or photography.


Required qualifications include an MFA or terminal degree in graphic design or allied fields, expertise in design foundations, graphic design history, theory and contemporary practice, technical skills in industry-standard graphic design software for the Mac, and intermediate-to-advanced proficiency with web programming (HTML5/CSS3) and ability to teach both print- and web-based design. Candidates must demonstrate engagement in professional design practice and creative research, and will be expected to engage in professional scholarship in art and design. The successful candidate will maintain knowledge of evolving technologies, participate in student advising, community outreach to maintain student internships and service-learning opportunities, university committee service, and demonstrate a desire to help shape a strong and growing program.
